Summary:
As kids learn to count and create groups of items we can begin exploring number sense concepts like comparing and more and less. A deep understanding of these concepts is an important focal point of early childhood math instruction. In the past we’ve shared some of our favorite hands-on games to practice one more and one less during center time. Here I’m outlining quick prep one more one less number sense activities that you can use to introduce the concept of one more and one less with concrete materials. Personally I like to use these activities in a small group or one on one session.

Summary:
Here’s a simple activity for preschoolers that will turn counting practice into a game! Lately, Owen (4.5) has felt like he is “too big” for counting activities that we used to do, but he actually still needs practice on counting. I realized that he is much more motivated to count when it involves keeping score, and so I set up this simple game for him.

Summary:
This counting game is fun way to practice number recognition and one to one correspondence and because it’s a game it will really appeal to preschoolers. The game is so simple and easy to set up and can be done with guidance or independently. Evan loves when I turn things into games and this one was a real treat due to the smacking aspect of it. Don’t be fooled by the fun and simplicity though. When playing this game lots of skills are being reinforced.

Summary:
Here’s a fun and colorful way to practice math facts and be active! All you need are some Post-It sticky notes in bright colors, a marker and some scissors. Start out by writing the numbers 1-20 on sticky notes and sticking them to the wall. Then cut up some of the post it notes into thirds with each piece having a sticky end to it. On each small piece write an addition or subtraction problem that corresponds to one of the big sticky notes on the wall. Once you have all 20 math problems written, let them match up the math problems with the correct answer!
