Summary:
It’s spring, and we have been learning a lot about life cycles of creatures that we find in our backyards like butterflies and frogs. I wanted to expand on that learning with a fun activity that works on shape recognition.
When I went to the dollar store to get flowers for our Mother’s Day centerpieces ( you’ll want to click on that seriously they are adorable), I saw these fog cut-outs and knew I had to find a way to use them. I decided to use them for a circle time shape match activity that we could transition to a free choice activity after doing it as a group.

Summary:
Feed the Shape Monster shape sorting is one of the best activities that I add to my plan for the first week of school. I made my own cute shape monsters with powerpoint shapes and some fun google eye clip art. I cut a mouth in the shape monster-the same shape as the monster, ie; circle-circle shaped mouth, triangle-triangle shaped mouth etc.
I made a hole in each bag and stapled the shape monster to the front and matched the holes so we could ‘feed’ the monsters! I gather up as many of each shape I have in my classroom-I use buttons, foam shapes, wood shapes, etc.
