Pre-K Investigation Of Healthy Foods
Best for Ages:
+4
Materials:
Items likely found at home
Summary:
No investigation on healthy foods would be complete without discussing where foods actually come from, though. For this, we used the Watch and Record Plants Lab to grow pinto beans, lima beans, and green beans. My kids enjoyed tracking the plant growth and observing how the roots grew underground in comparison to how the stem and leaves grew above ground. It was a neat way to learn more about the foods we eat and where they come from.

Planting Seeds Gardening Activity

Summary:
Planting seeds with kids is one of my favorite nature activities. Preschoolers love to be part of the process. They are fascinated how the seeds are tucked into the soil and they take great care by watering them daily, waiting for them to grow.
When the first sign of green pops through the soil, the biggest smiles erupt from their faces. Once they take their plants home, parents say the preschoolers continue to nurture them, making sure they get plenty of water and light. What a valuable life lesson!

Summary:
One of the reasons I love doing seed germination for kids is how quickly the seeds start to grow. It was Day 2 this time when our first seed started to root. And by the next day there were sprouts too. By Day 5, three of our four seeds were growing strong. Here is a little run down of our results, though yours may of course be slightly different. In this activity, we have found out which seeds sprout the fastest, which are the easiest to grow, and which simply look AWESOME.
